Reed Sticks
Aromatherapy is based on the principle of healing the body and mind through inhalation of various scents from
essential oils. These are concentrated aromatic oils obtained from plants, flowers, and herbs.
Different oils have, obviously, different therapeutic effects when inhaled, and the combination of oils and
reed sticks that are afterwards burned make the perfect association for therapeutic purposes.
There are many ways in which essential oils can be used in aromatherapy. You can put a few drops in your bath
water, on a hot or cold compress, or in a facial steam. The oils can be massaged directly into the skin, or the
fragrance can be dispersed more widely by using a diffuser. Essential oils can be spread into the air and get
inhaled by the users through different devices. Among these devices we should mention candles, burners, reed
diffusers, aromatherapy lamps or electric diffusers. One very widely used device is the reed diffuser which
consists of oils, a container and obviously the reed sticks.
You need the container to put the essential oil in it and also to hold the reed sticks. The reed sticks’ role is
to allow the oil in the container move upwards in order to be released in the air. If you search through the
internet or specialists about reed sticks, you will find out that there are reed sticks made of different types of
wood. Some don’t care about the material their reed sticks are made of, whereas others will tell you that the
rattan reed sticks are the best. These people explain that the reed sticks made of rattan are better as they have
channels through them and these channels allow the oils to travel upwards naturally and be released into the air
easily enough to accomplish the purpose for which the diffuser was meant.
With reed sticks made of bamboo the results are not as effi ciently delivered as expected as bamboo sticks have nodes inside, which impede on
the movement of the oils. The advantage of using reed sticks of any kind in diffusing oil fragrances, is that
you do not need any source of heating the oils – neither electricity, nor fire. Therefore diffusing oils with
reed sticks is safe. You can leave home without worrying about not having unplugged the device or not having
put out the candle. Besides the use of reed sticks in aromatherapy, there are other uses of these devices in
home decoration and improvement. Reed sticks are used to make shades and blinds, chopsticks, placemats, rugs
and carpets etc.
